🏎 The exotics league: 50 makes, rarest first
Supercars, luxury brands, niche motorcycles, retro classics and newcomers — sorted from the rarest make to familiar names like Triumph. Far beyond that sit Porsche, Tesla and Harley-Davidson with over 200,000 each.
Bar length is logarithmic, otherwise the rare ones would be invisible. A Bugatti (18) is far rarer than a Wartburg (5,976). Figures per KBA make name, spellings and several plants of a brand summed; “Click here for more details” opens all types of the make (by HSN) in search in a new window. The rank among all KBA make names is shown as a tooltip on the link.
🏆 Rank 1 is a trailer
The most common single type in Germany is not a Golf or Polo but a STEMA trailer (HSN 7801, TSN ABT) with 265,542 units — ahead of the VW T-Roc (212,841). Whole trailer makers outrank well-known car brands:
Examples: STEMA (rank 13) is ahead of Peugeot and Mazda, HUMBAUR (18) ahead of Citroën and Fiat, BÖCKMANN (29) even ahead of the Porsche brand (388,972). Together these six trailer makes total 2,761,875 vehicles. Rank = position among all make names in the KBA table.
The trailer makers in profile
| Make | Base | In brief |
|---|---|---|
| STEMA | Großenhain (Sachsen) | Built in Großenhain near Dresden for over 70 years; in 2023 market leader for car trailers in Germany with about 30,000 registrations and almost 15.5 % share (about 186 employees). Box trailers up to 6 m, tippers, plant, motorcycle and car transporters; the entry-level Basic series is sold with 750 to 1,000 kg gross weight. |
| HUMBAUR | Gersthofen bei Augsburg | Founded in 1957 by Anton Humbaur as an agricultural machinery and trailer dealer in Donauwörth, in Gersthofen since 1980; in 2020 about 512 employees and €159.5 million revenue. About 420 standard models from single-axle to tandem, tippers, vehicle and horse transporters, heavy-duty trailers since 2004; the 1,111,111th trailer has already been built in Gersthofen. |
| BÖCKMANN | Lastrup (Niedersachsen) | Founded in 1956 as a village smithy in Lastrup (originally “ABLAS”), now run by the third generation; over one million trailers built, more than 500 employees and over 300 dealers in over 30 countries. Specialist in horse and livestock trailers, plus car, plant and vehicle transporters and horse trucks. |
| ANSSEMS | Niederlande · Deutschlandvertrieb in Bad Bentheim | Dutch brand sold in Germany through its own megastores (12 sites with more than 300 trailers in stock each). Range: car, tipper, high-loader, box, horse and plant trailers, also under the sister brand Hulco. |
| TPV PRIKOLICE | Novo mesto (Slowenien) | Slovenian maker of light cargo trailers within the TPV group in Novo mesto, otherwise best known as an automotive supplier. |
| SARIS | Niederlande (KBA-Kennung NL) | Trailer brand of Dutch origin according to the KBA make name. |
On tonnage: car trailers in Germany mostly fall into two classes — unbraked up to 750 kg, braked up to 3.5 t gross weight. Makers often offer both; per-model weights are in the manufacturers’ catalogues. The profiles rely on manufacturer information and press texts (e.g. stema.de, Wikipedia, boeckmann.com, anssems.com, tpv.si); unverified details are deliberately left out.
🧬 The long tail: millions of vehicles, thousands of one-offs
Half of all registered vehicles are spread over about 1,400 types; the other half over more than 61,000. Look for rare types in the search.

🔤 Type keys that spell a word
The TSN has three characters — sometimes they spell a word. Stock across all makes using that TSN:
Note: a TSN is only unique together with the HSN; “ABT” is mostly the STEMA trailer, the others are pure coincidence. Try it in the search (leave HSN empty, enter TSN).
